A funny thing happened though ,I decided to sit with the Apache Army today  and it was a shocking experience.

Clyde say enormous challenges lie ahead as they became the first Scottish senior football club to become a fully democratic community interest company.

The Third Division strugglers’ shareholders agreed to the change of ownership at an extraordinary meeting.

“The work required in the next five years will be enormous to ensure that the long-term decline becomes a piece of history,” said a statement.

“This move sets Clyde apart from any other senior club in Scots football.”

The Cumbernauld club were runners-up in Division One in 2004, narrowly missing out on Scotland’s top flight.

But they went close to going into administration and are presently four points adrift at the bottom of the Third Division after two successive relegations.

Now the club that started in Glasgow in 1877 as a members’ club but incorporated as a limited liability company in the early part of the 20th century, has reverted to its former status after a unanimous vote by shareholders.

This groundbreaking change is not a final step. Rather, it’s the first step in the rebirth of a great club Clyde chairman John Alexander

Club chairman John Alexander told his club website: “Football is a precarious business, we have agreed a new set of rules and that means that this club will never again risk its future on unsustainable dreams and debt.

“The club has developed a sustainable model of operation and this is enshrined in the new structure.

“The revised articles state that the club cannot borrow to pay wages or salaries of employees and the club cannot be conducted for private gain.

“The ethos will be to promote a successful football club that will encourage and develop sporting opportunities and activities in the community.

“This groundbreaking change is not a final step. Rather, it’s the first step in the rebirth of a great club.”

The club’s board worked closely with the Clyde Supporters’ Trust in forming the new structure.

Trust chairman Gordon Thomson said: “We were determined that our members were fully informed and not left in the dark.

“The interest and quality of debate demonstrated how supporters can be trusted to participate fully in the life of their club.

“A one member, one vote democracy is the culmination of an objective that we have sought for many years. We are delighted to see it now achieved.

“We believe our club will be safer and stronger in the hands of the many rather than the few. I hope others can follow our example.”

George ‘Gideon’ Osborne makes me really angry. If ever we needed a reminder of how nasty the Tories were in the 1980s and 1990s he is its epitome. It now seems like a crime to have worked in the public sector or ever been on the dole.

Does anyone think this heir to millions would last 5 minutes in a low wage job, yet alone the years of slog he expects from everyone else. As Chris Dillow puts it, the hypocrisy of the man is breathtaking – of all the people to criticise someone getting something for nothing, he is the worst example. There are FIVE, yes FIVE million people in this country who work for less than £6.75 an hour – that’s just £13,000 a year!!!

The tabloids focus relentlessly on benefit scroungers and find the ripest candidate of layabout families they can. Nobody, I repeat nobody wants to be on benefits. If it is a ‘lifestyle choice’ it is because it is a ‘hobsons’ choice.
Who can blame people being on benefit when to work makes their subsistence existence no better financially. The problem is not benefits being too high – all benefits do is allow you to exist – it just about covers your rent and provides £7 a day for everything else if you are lucky – hardly luxury – try living on that for long. Most on benefit end up in debt – it is a miserable existence. The real problem is that wages do not pay any more than benefits.

I have more sympathy for the single mother struggling to pay the rent failing to declare a boyfriend who lives with her so she can claim a few grand, than millionnaires who pay less tax than their cleaners because they are so good at tax dodging. Yet no-one targets them. No tabloid leads on the front page with tax cheats, only ‘benefit cheats’. All the right-wing press ignore the fact that benefit fraud and error is much lower than unclaimed benefit or tax avoidance by the wealthy.

If we really wanted to get people off benefit, the wealthiest 10% who have millions plus in assets and earn in excess of £20 an hour and £40,000 a year have got to start paying a living wage around £7.50 an hour, or £15,000 a year (and we need to sort out wage taxes so no-one on this low wage pays tax). If we don’t do that, we cannot complain when people choose to sit on their arse rather than effectively be slaves eking out a miserable existence to fund the ruling classes yachts. Cut benefits and see crime rise. In the end, until the Tory classes can see past the mistakes of the Victorians in classifying people in this way, they will be the losers along with the rest of us as society descends into a nasty maelstrom of crime and decline. We will all be the losers but only the ruling classes will be to blame.

This tells us something about him. I am shocked by this fact and it means one of two things.

He is either a crap judge of player, or he is a crap coach.

He should be neither given the UEFA badges he claims to have.

Or maybe there is a more sinister angle and his man management skills are nil.

We must face reality that on the catchment area we have and the gates we have to live on does not allow us as a club to sign experienced players on inflated wages when we can’t justify it in the short-term never mind the long-term.

When the youth policy was first mooted the trust faced diametric opposition from the corridors of power,various tuts and whats in it for us ,and that is a quote from a conversation I had with a director.

It seems to me that bringing so many young lads in this season this is what the manager is thinking.

Now not so many years ago fans had direct contact with players and I am still in contact with a few of them.

A lot of what is wrong with the modern game is fans are kept in the dark and have no access to the players.

I have used the example before of the night I was at Hampden ,I was 12 or 13 and Scotland were playing Northern Ireland

My Dad and I were standing at the pie stall and he nudged me and said “do you see who is over there” , it was Alan Gilzean,Ian Ure and I think Alex Hamilton.

I stood there stuck to the spot when I saw them ,and with programme in shaking hands I went over to ask for their autographs they all put down their pie and drinks and signed my Programme for me.

The point of that story is –can you imagine that now–no is the answer.

Not at the same level but that does not happen for wee lads at Dumbarton but our players are as much heroes to them.

It’s not so long ago when I lost a bet to James McInstray and had to dress up as Superman at Ayr.

The point is that we felt part of the club then ,we sure as hell don’t now.

If Jim on saturday says we are completely going the youth way I would accept that and anything that goes with it.

The reality of it is if we do not go that way, and try to be something we are not, there is only one way it will end.
